How to Clean a Bathtub Drainage

It doesn't matter how much we spend to gussy up our bathrooms, or how pristinely we decorate them--they all meet the same fate. Face it, some nasty things take place in bathrooms, and even though we make them appear as though they're pleasant places, someone must eventually grasp reality and clean this little space. That includes scrubbing the toilets, wiping down the sinks, and--even worse--cleaning out the bathtub drain. While that's not a job that needs to be done every day or two, it should be performed routinely. A few simple steps can make this unpleasant task a little bit easier.

1 Put on rubber gloves before starting this task. Take the end of the screwdriver and slip it gently underneath the very edge of the round fitting that keeps the bathtub drain in place. Pry gently until you can fit your fingers underneath the ring, and gently pull it upward.

In some instances, this ring is fastened by one or two screws. If this is the case, unscrew each screw and gently remove the metal ring.

2 Pull the drain fixture out of the drainpipe and set it in the bottom of the bathtub. Pour the drain-cleaning solution down into the pipe, per the product directions.

3 Scrub the drain sifter and the round fitting, as well as the drain innards, with an old toothbrush and some bathroom-cleaning solution. If no cleaning solution is available, mix 1 part ammonia with 3 parts water in a cleaning bucket, and use this to scrub off the pieces of the drain.

If lime or soap scum has built up and caused the little holes in the drain sifter to become clogged, gently pierce each hole with a toothpick and continue scrubbing with the toothbrush and cleaning solution.

4 Rinse all pieces of the drain with water until no soapy residue remains. Rinse several gallons of water down the drain after waiting the amount of time specified in the instructions of the drain-cleaning solution.

5 Reassemble the drain, starting with the drain fixture and ending by securing the round fitting over the drain sifter. Again, rinse the area thoroughly with water and wipe dry with paper towels.
