Take Out a Cast Iron Tub

Removing an old cast iron bathtub can be a backbreaking process. Often, cast iron tubs weigh in excess of 300 lb. and are wider than the door opening in your bathroom. Plan ahead and make a clear path for your tub, which may entail removing doors, door trim, toilets, vanities and handrails from stairs. If you are not reusing or selling the tub, you may break it and move it out in pieces.

Keeping the Tub
1 Turn off the water to your tub; you may need to shut off the water to your whole house if there is not a shut off valve in the bathroom.

2 Remove the drain cover using a screwdriver. If you have a pop up plug, remove the plug, then remove the outer ring. Remove the flange inside the pipe with a tub tool. The flange is the cross bar inside the drain.

3 Stuff rags into the drain to protect it from any debris. Use a pry bar to remove the tub from the floor and wall.

4 Lift the tub with another person and remove it from the home.

4 Cover the tub with a thick blanket or drop cloth. Put on all of your protective gear.

5 Hit the tub with a sledgehammer, breaking it up into manageable pieces. Remove the pieces from your home.
